Author Marketing Guide: Audience Demographics
One of the most important things to consider before promoting your book is the demographic of your audience.
- Who are they?
- Where do they shop?
- What sort of readers does your book appeal to?
- What other books do they read?
- What blogs or news sources do they read?
- How can we reach them?
It is much easier to target well-defined groups than a huge amorphous chunk of the population. For example, if you identify “history experts” as your core market, even the largest of marketing budgets would struggle to deliver any impact. However, if you define the group more tightly, such as “religious history students and academics”, we can start to identify ways of reaching them on a much more limited budget.
It is crucial to have a clear sense of who would want to buy your book and will help us target them appropriately through our blog, social media, external websites, and mailing lists.
